THE CRAZY MIND (Part - 3)

Jonathan: “Sir, Can you tell me something about yourself?”

Old man: “If you are interested to know I will, by all means, tell you about my background. The doctor with whom I was staying was unmarried and after a couple of years he moved to Portugal, and I also went along with him. After working in Portugal for about ten years, the doctor was getting old and wanted to get back to India. One day an Indian born neurosurgeon, from the United States, who came to Lagos for sightseeing with his family, happened to meet see me on the beach and he took a liking towards me. Because of this Indian surgeon who was extremely kind towards, I was also able to go to the USA, and I lived there for almost 30 years, but then finally I decided to come back to my village because this place was close to my heart.”

Jonathan: “I would like to say that you had gone through an extraordinary passage of your life spending your childhood with a woman of high principles and the entire adult life you were associated with learned people like the doctor and surgeon, who were highly educated. You have also had an amazing life in Europe and the USA which means you have seen it all in your lifetime.”

Old man: “ Yes, I am thankful to God because the Almighty has shown a lot of mercy towards me after having been born as an orphan child.”

Jonathan: “Thanks for telling me so many things about yourself and I admire you that you did not even ask a single question about me or my family. Sir, I have come to you specifically to understand from you about ‘mind’ and why people behave in a manner that is special to each which is distinctly different from one another.”

Old man: “It is too complex a subject, but I can tell you about ‘mind’ from my perspective and understanding of self because of my unique circumstances in life and from the type of environment that I had lived which had remarkably two different social structures.

As stated in some books human psyche works due to our consciousness(awareness) on account of which we can understand this world around us. However, our mind works at two different levels, one which is conscious and other of which we are not aware, that is, unconscious. The first one operates on the surface and the other is embedded deep inside. There is a third level called sub-conscious but it becomes too complicated, and therefore we will stick to the first two categories only.

“ As we know brain of different species on Earth have evolved over several hundred millions of years and as the human brain is the considered the most advanced this should have perhaps happened just recently over few hundred thousand years since the evolution of human brain. We need to perhaps split the mental faculty into two different aspects of life during this process called evolution.

“One significant part of life is the ‘physiological side’ of growth of the brain regarding size and complexity of the basic primary brain to a secondary brain which is called grey matter or the outer cortex system. But let us not forget that the second aspect which is ‘psychological or emotional side’ which has happened all along the path of evolution because of the variety of environmental factors which continually changed for all species including humans who have ventured all over the planet.

“During the past several thousand years, the human activities have had so many variations from time to time due to migration and also the intermingling of different tribes of human societies with a variety of habits, languages, and cultures. Therefore there would have been profound ‘psychological’ impact on our ancestral genes of every human beings during their entire lifespan.

“Therefore, it would be correct to consider that brain development has continuously happened corresponding to the different ways of functioning and experiences of human mind like ‘institution’ which was the act of experimenting or exploring to know what it could be or what will be possible. Because during initial stages humans would have acted similarly to what a small child does after it starts moving around after birth.

“ The other fundamental aspect of the mind is due to the ‘physical sensory’ responses by the process of touching, tasting, smelling and hearing the sound which would have gradually enhanced human sensory capabilities. Perhaps, as a result of the above-mentioned process, the ‘development of human sensory parts of the central nervous system’ which connects the brain memory and the activation mechanism would have taken place very slowly over a large span of time.

“Another unique ability of humans would have developed after the passage of thousands of years of evolution was to understand through ‘feelings’ and the ability to empathise with others. This ability to rationalize perhaps developed, relatively, very recently. This would have happened primarily from the man’s observation, initially a beast like species, by understanding the evolutionary natural bonding characteristics between a mother and a child which is the fundamental and most intrinsic quality of all species during evolutionary process of almost all the living entities, on the surface of Earth, for hundreds of millions of years.

“ The analytical ability would have been the last stage after all the above three stages of development because the most enhanced and continuously growing analytical ‘thinking’ ability which had a profound impact on human life would have happened at the end of the process of evolution of the brain mechanism.

“ You would have noticed that the analytical ‘thinking mind’ is the one which has become the most dominating as of today because of the overwhelming information that is made available to humankind as on date because information is flowing like an eternal stream of water.

“However, if you take my case, as a child I had no proper parenting or a normal childhood. I always indulged in a lot of experimentation and explored many things, all on my own, because this is the way my mind would have functioned unable to get answers to various questions which any normal child would fundamentally seek. As the old lady was always busy doing something and she would talk only when she had time but again, she would tell what she wants to say. Moreover, I was terrified of her, and I wouldn’t dare to ask questions. Thus, I tended to ask too many questions whenever I meet people who came to the tea shop. The old lady was never able to pay attention to me as her primary focus was to earn for her daily livelihood, and the woman used to often get offended that I am holding people in the shop for too long which meant a loss of business for her because it worked to her disadvantage during peak hours.

Therefore, my childlike curiosity to know never died and even now I continue to explore but more on a mental platform because this has become a big part of my conscious mind out of sheer childhood habits.
