Advantages and Disadvantages of Information /Technology

On one hand our ability to visualize what we see and what we hear help us understand the world around us but on the other hand given the limitations of our physical senses human beings although considered the most intelligent species on Earth have severe constraint because there are so many complexities out there which we cannot understand and therefore unknown to us.

Almost all species living on Earth have different types of abilities and also maintain some means of communication but one of the greatest gifts given to Humankind is the skill to read and write.

Humans are also the only one of its kind known for its ABILITY to think consciously with a high level of memory storage that helps 'application of intelligence' which also gives them the choice to opt between the ‘right and the "wrong’.

Thus the special skills to read and write have not only proved vital to information proliferation for the entire humankind but also, to a great extent, is responsible for the human species to aspire and investigate deeper into the mysterious aspects of life which we often term as "spiritual knowledge". Most of us will admit that it is theology which has played a great role in human civilization in the past as well in the present.

For the majority of the population to understand as well as appreciate the creator has not been very easy due to the simple fact that humans can only see all the stupendous creations but not the creationist because science invariably considers cosmic energy as an automated or rather chaotic process!!

However, Ralph Waldo Emerson rightly put it "All I have seen teaches me to trust Creator for all that I have not seen" and therefore it is a truth that we all understand only a part of what we see through our senses and therefore to understand what we do not see is next to impossible.

Now coming back to information the special ability for humankind to handover information from one individual to another has not only enhanced the so-called 'knowledge bank' but also has helped to transform humankind to what it is today.

During ancient times as we all know knowledge was restricted to a very few people inside a group or a small habitat because only verbal communication took place between humans or their ancestors during the prehistoric era.

As per historians, which perhaps may be partly true, about 5000 years back written communication started in Mesopotamia in the area of Tigris-Euphrates river system which corresponds to modern-day Iraq, Kuwait, northeastern section of Syria, southeastern Turkey and southwestern parts of Iran. It is also believed that some written system was prevalent over 5000 years ago in the Indus Valley civilization what is today north east Afghanistan to Pakistan and north-west India and this civilization thrived in the basins of Indus river.

So ancient knowledge spread across the vast land and water no sooner writings were done on stone or wood cuttings or dried leaves before the paper came into existence.

However, it is the clan called ‘gurus’ in the olden days who without any prejudice helped knowledge transmigrate from one place to another verbally before writing came into existence.

Beginning with travel over land surfaces on horses and then using sailboats to travel over water it was the discovery of iron and coal followed by steam engine in the year 1710 and electric motor in 1830 the process of mass-scale industrial revolution started thanks to 'knowledge migration' which one would consider as a major technological leap 2 or 3 centuries ago.

It is the steam engine that started the rail transport but discovery crude petroleum gave the momentum for the discovery of diesel and petrol engines leading to the production of motor cars, large-scale ships and aircraft only about 100 years ago!.

Therefore information exchange within humankind has helped u to progress by leaps and bounds during the last 300 years but the recent advent of World Wide Web and the ever-increasing connectivity of computers and the fast-growing communication technology, in less than 25 years, have undoubtedly made maximum impact the way humans live and communicate today.

Information technology and communication has not only made the exchange of knowledge fast and economical but also has given the fillip to creative expression and entertainment. New technologies have also significantly reduced the cost of carrying out trade and commerce on a global scale.

Today we have access to information on a scale never before imagined and perhaps many of us now could be even considered the world wide web of computers as our modern age guru and also the warehouse that provides access to an unprecedented volume of information. Today we have mobile phones or smartphones which are circulating information like the ceaseless motion of waves that carry ocean waters towards land to deposit unwanted matters on the sandy shores irrespective of whether it is required.

So it may not be out of place to say that we have also come to a stage very similar to a situation when the first half of  last century saw Germans who invented so many new organic molecules that were synthesized in a matter of few years and nearly a thousand new  organic chemicals that got discovered were idling on the laboratory shelf without the chemists knowing what to do with those new inventions.

Perhaps similarly we are reaching a stage where a huge information maze is causing so much drain on human brain because it is the brain which consumes maximum energy resources from our body but at the same time lower part of the human body is also getting affected which is a big cost which perhaps many of us do not realize!

The last two decades have contributed to a huge amount of electronic waste and a substantial quantity of energy is being used (electricity and other fossil fuels) and human beings are using natural resources like never before and the sad part is it is being done not for just survival like the old civilization!

This kind of diversified information and the use of information technology sometimes appear like a path that might lead us towards chaos like an information soup, consuming only valuable energy both from our brain as well as the electric power generating units and it appears we are reaching a stage called ‘point of no return’.

Almost on a daily basis, we see the efforts that are going into new discoveries and creation of innovative products, many of them unnecessary, but at the same time, we need to realize the wasteful and destructive ways of our modern society which is taking a toll on nature due to wastage of several valuable resources!

The debatable question is do we need or does humankind need such extravagant display of new innovations by consuming so many resources!

The moot question is how long will our resources last!

LET US HOPE WISE HUMAN SENSE (GROUP EFFORTS) WILL PREVAIL BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.
